53 Students Received Scholarships During Annual CUKC Event

At the 2023 Cleveland University-Kansas City and Cleveland Foundation Fund Scholarship Awards Banquet in December, 53 CUKC students received scholarships. The celebration on December 1 was attended by close to 200 students, faculty members, staff members, and donors.

According to a CUKC press release, Jessica Ramirez, vice president of advancement, announced that a total of $70,000 was distributed, representing 37 scholarships administrated by the Cleveland Foundation Fund.

Organizations like the Heart of America Patriot Foundation, which awards scholarships to students with the Chapter 35 designation, and the Spencer C. Duncan Make it Count Foundation, which helps our student veterans, also contributed additional scholarships. Students who are dependents of a veteran of the United States Armed Forces or a service member who has been killed, captured, injured while performing their duty, or gone missing are eligible under Chapter 35.

The welcome for the evening was given by Dr. Timothy Meng ’66, a member of the Cleveland College Foundation and chairman of the board of trustees. Meng is the father of a third generation chiropractor and a second generation chiropractor.

Meng stated, “The Cleveland College Foundation exists to sustain the rich history of Cleveland University-Kansas City, which is beginning its second century this year, as well as to financially support the University’s mission of education, scholarship, and service.” “The generosity and investment in CUKC students is greatly appreciated by the University and the Foundation.”

Students must apply for all scholarships for which they qualify, including essay-writing scholarships, in order to be considered for an award. Every year, applications and essays are reviewed by a scholarship committee comprised of teachers and staff. The annual Scholarship Banquet is where the recipients are revealed, and the scholarship funds are applied to the student’s subsequent academic year.

“It was a wonderful event, and I know all the donors, employees, and guests were excited to celebrate these students,” Jalonna Bowie, CUKC director of campus and alumni relations, said. “It’s our goal to have as many students apply as possible. We hope to continue, if not increase, the amount of scholarships awarded next year.

CUKC President Dr. Carl S. Cleveland III presented the awards, followed by commemorative photos of students with their donor or CUKC representative.
