Applications Open for 2024 Ken Burns Memorial Scholarship

The 2024 Ken Burns Memorial Scholarship essay question is on book-banning. Established seven years ago by the Marshall County Democratic Club in memory of the long-time Asbury educator and lifelong Democrat, two scholarships for academic or practical training beyond high school will be granted this spring.

Applicants must be Marshall County residents and US citizens, a graduating senior from a Marshall County Public High School with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, plan to attend an accredited vocational or academic two or four-year institution as a full-time student, and provide documentation of extracurricular activities. The scholarship application packet includes complete instructions.

The two $750 scholarships will be given based on academic credentials, a 500-word essay, activities, and a letter of recommendation.

The topic for this year’s essay is: “Recent news, political, and social media conversations include the banning of books from public and school libraries. What is your reaction to the topic of banning books, and how does that impact our society.”

Completed scholarship application packages must be received by March 15, and the scholarship grant must be used within one calendar year of the award date. Winners will be notified by April 15.

Application packets are available through high school counselors, at area public libraries, on-line at www.marshallcountyalabamaparty.com, or via email by sending a request to susanmc@charter.net.
