Chicago Public Schools is among the dozens of schools and districts closed Tuesday as severe cold and wind chill warnings remain across Northeast Illinois.
“Dear CPS Families,” a letter from CPS read in part. “We have been carefully monitoring the forecast over the past 24 hours, and have determined that given frigid temperatures predicted for tomorrow, and a Wind Chill Warning from the National Weather Service that wind chills that could reach -30 degrees, it will be unsafe for staff and students to travel to school. Therefore, we are canceling all classes for Tuesday, January 16.”
All after-school activities, including sports games and athletic practice, will also be canceled, according to the district.
DePaul University will advance the start of its spring semester one day earlier, with no courses scheduled for Tuesday.
On Tuesday, school districts in the area, including Plainfield, Clarendon Hills, and Palos Heights, will transition to e-learning.
Several schools are also closing outright, including Buffalo Grove High School and District 214 in Arlington Heights.
Other businesses have declared closures on Tuesday owing to the chilly temperatures, including Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art.
“Due to the extreme cold weather conditions, the MCA will be closed on Tuesday, January 16,” an announcement from the museum said.
