52 students were honored with the John and Abigail Adams Scholarship by the city’s high school recently, following their strong performance in the MCAS examination held in the spring.
Under the merit-based scholarship program, which is administered by the state’s Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, students can receive credit toward their undergraduate tuition for up to eight semesters at a Massachusetts public college or university.
Students completing the MCAS exam in the tenth grade must place in the “Advanced” category of one of the three assessment tests in STE subjects like engineering and chemistry, mathematics, or English language arts in order to be eligible for the program. In addition, their aggregate MCAS score needs to be in the top 25% for their school district, and they need to be proficient or advanced in the other two categories.
