Many foreign students studying in Australia will desire to work while there. It is critical for these students to understand the job restrictions imposed by their student visa.
Work Rules for International Students
International students in Australia with a valid student visa can work up to 20 hours per week while school is in session, with no limit on the number of hours worked during authorized school breaks. In Australia, a work week lasts from Monday to the following Sunday. Students may arrive in Australia up to 90 days before their degree begins, but they are not permitted to begin working until their courses have commenced.
The 20-hour-per-week limit does not apply to any work that a student is obligated to conduct as part of their studies or training. Volunteer and unpaid employment, on the other hand, contribute towards the 20-hour limit. If an international student works more than the Australian regulations permit, his or her visa may be revoked.
Work Rules for Family Members of International Students
Family members (spouses and children) accompanying an international student on their student visa have the same job rights as the student (20 hours per week). Unlike students, family members may not work more than 20 hours a week, including on holidays. For students pursuing a graduate degree, such as a master’s degree, their families can work an unlimited number of hours. Like students, family members are not permitted to begin work until the student has begun his or her study.
Work Permission and Visa Applications
Prior to April 26, 2008, students applying for a student visa to Australia had to apply separately for authorization to work. As of April 26, 2008, students can now acquire permission to work in addition to their visa grant. This applies to both the student and any family members who may be accompanying the student on his or her visa. This saves students time and money when they apply for visas and work permits.
International students who intend to study in Australia must first be admitted into an Australian educational institution before applying for a student visa. When applying for a visa, students must include a confirmation of enrollment from the Australian educational institution that they want to attend. This demonstrates that the student is indeed staying in Australia for educational purposes. It is also recommended that students apply for a visa as soon as possible to begin their stay in Australia, due to the time it takes to process a visa application.
Further Rules and Regulations
Other rules and restrictions under Australian student visas include:
- Students are required to follow a consistent study program approved by the Australian government.
- Students must meet all of the requirements of the study program in which they are enrolled.
- Students must maintain satisfactory attendance and academic progress during each study hour as specified by their school.
- Students are required to maintain Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC).
Working during your stay in Australia is an excellent method for international students to augment their income. However, as an international student, you must be aware of the restrictions that apply to you. If you break any of these conditions, your student visa may be canceled, and you may be deported from Australia.
