Plymouth High School Student Earns Full-Ride Scholarship to Notre Dame

Recently, Jessica Haro, a senior at Plymouth High School, was given a full scholarship to attend Notre Dame University.

All of this is possible because to QuestBridge, a nationwide foundation that awards full scholarships to students for study at the best universities in the nation, such as USC, Princeton, Yale, Duke, and many more prestigious colleges.

Jessica was one of the 2,000 award winners out of 20,000 applications.

Jessica’s dream school has been Notre Dame since she visited the campus with her mother during a field trip in the fifth grade. She claimed that they both fell in love with the school right away.

Jessica’s journey starts when her parents moved to the US in their early 20s from Jalisco, Mexico. In the end, Jessica explained, her parents came here in search of chances.

They reared their three daughters, Jessica among them, in this location. She was a shy child growing up in a bilingual family.

That was before she was hired by Kroger as a cashier, where she quickly advanced to the position of customer service representative.

She claimed that social interaction helped her come out of her shell and develop into the leader she is today.

Jessica is a member of the student council, which participates in monthly service projects, and she plays violin in the orchestra at her school. In her spare time, she mentors a few of her classmates and participates in the National Honors Society and Future Teachers of America.

Jessica stated that she will always remember December 1, 2023. She soon found out she was attending Notre Dame on a full-ride scholarship, after nervously awaiting word from QuestBridge all day.

“I can say that hard work truly pays off, there’s so many opportunities in the place that you live in,” Jessica says.

As a first-generation college student, Jessica’s life has not only changed but also barriers have been broken by winning the scholarship. Her sister’s inability to attend college because of her DACA status is one of the financial hardships her family has experienced that is lessened by her accomplishment.

Jessica manages to balance her recreational and academic commitments while exhibiting exceptional leadership and dedication.

Jessica said she plans to major in computer science simply because she loves math.

“Have belief in yourself and have pride in who you are,” Jessica said.
