Shasta High Senior Awarded Full Stanford Scholarship through QuestBridge

A Redding high school student has been awarded a scholarship to Stanford University as part of the non-profit QuestBridge scholarship program.

Amira Hutcherson, a senior from Shasta High School, will attend Palo Alto University in the fall after receiving a full four-year QuestBridge scholarship.

Students apply to the National College Match, which is a college admissions and scholarship procedure that allows high-achieving, low-income students to get admitted early and receive full four-year scholarships. They will then receive a specific college application that will be sent through QuestBridge to the best institutions in the country based on their own rankings and will be read by college admissions staff.

QuestBridge’s college partners will decide whether to admit you and reward you with a full four-year Match Scholarship based on your application. A matched student is admitted to one of the college partners on their rankings list and receives a full four-year scholarship.

Amira was chosen as a finalist, and Stanford was the highest ranked school on her list to accept her.

“Being a low-income, first-generation student, for the longest time, I assumed that this wouldn’t really happen for me. I assumed that I would just be going to Chico State or somewhere close that would be really easy,” Hutcherson said. “It’s a big deal for my family because we always worried about the financials and I was already getting ready to settle. So knowing that I can still accomplish my dreams and my hopes is a pretty big deal and it’s very important.”

Hutcherson has also battled cancer. She credits her battle with providing her with the energy and inspiration she needs to accomplish goals like these. She also attributed her ability to get a scholarship to a prominent university such as Stanford to her great work ethic in the classroom. In addition to her family, friends, and teachers throughout her academic career.
