Unclaimed $1M Powerball Prize Will Help the Kentucky Scholarship Program

The Kentucky Lottery has refunded $1 million in college scholarships and fellowships after a Powerball ticket dated July 19, 2023 went unclaimed.

According to a Kentucky Lottery press release, the unclaimed reward will be transferred to the Unclaimed reward Fund, which benefits the Kentucky Educational Excellence Scholarship, or KEES.

The unclaimed ticket, sold at a Pilot Travel Center in Pendleton, Kentucky, expired on January 15. However, the ticket had to be sent to the lottery headquarters by 5 p.m. on Jan. 12 due to the offices’ closure for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Kentucky Lottery President Mary Harville says they’ve been waiting for the ticket’s owner to come forward for more than six months. “Unfortunately, the ticket was never claimed, but there is a bright side at the end of the day. We will return $1 million to education to support our purpose of providing scholarships and grants to Kentucky children and their families.

The Kentucky Lottery gave out more than $1.4 billion in prizes in 2023, while lottery ticket profits totaled more than $4.8 billion since 1999 for Kentucky grants and scholarship programs.

The unclaimed ticket matched the first white balls, 7-10-11-13-24, from the July 19 drawing.
