UW-Stevens Point Scholarship Gift Will Benefit Students from Royall High School

Royall High School students, principal and Panther mascot join UW-Stevens Point’s leadership and Stevie Pointer mascot at an announcement of a $1 million estate gift. The endowment will provide scholarships for qualified Royall High School graduates who attend UW-Stevens Point.

Scholarships supported by a $1 million endowment will benefit students from Royall High School in Elroy, Wisconsin, who attend the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

The Carol Krohn College Scholarship was established with gifts from the estate of Thomas F. Davis, and will support one or more $2,500 scholarships for Royall graduates. With ongoing need and academic advancement, the scholarship is renewable for up to three years. There are three grants available for students enrolling in the fall of 2024.

Students must be Royall High School seniors who have been accepted to UW-Stevens Point. Although financial need is preferred, it is not needed. Students must be enthusiastic about furthering their studies and have a track record of school and community activity. The scholarship is administered by the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point School of Education and is available for any field of study.

“These scholarships will help fill the gaps of the financial burden that might otherwise limit the further education of our students,” said Scott Uppena, Royall High School and Middle School principal. “This donation ensures that Carol’s legacy lives on through the lives of Royall students. I’m truly excited about the future partnership with UW-Stevens Point.”

“The Carol Krohn endowment represents a dedication to supporting college-bound students by extending financial assistance to accomplished graduates of Royall High School,” said Lynda Fernholz, assistant dean and head of the School of Education. “This gift will help students reduce their education debt, so their focus remains on career readiness.”

Krohn was Davis’ fiancée and a 1971 UW-Stevens Point graduate. She was 23 years old when she was killed by a drunk driver while teaching English and drama at her alma mater, Royall High School. Davis died on April 18, 2022, exactly 50 years after Krohn died.
